International Day of Peace
Association for Community Awareness (ASCOA) is dedicated to promoting peace building in the society. Each year, we celebrate the International Day of Peace on the 21st of September with the rest of the world.
This day, which is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, was first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and peoples. Today, the 21st of September 2016, ASCOA commemorates this special day by executing a match pass from Molyko Check point Buea to Mile 17.
In order to promote world peace and raise awareness of the International Day of Peace,ASCOA has carried out several events such as the Peace Crane Project in surrounding villages, created peace clubs in some local secondary schools, and conducted road shows to promote peace education.
The theme for the International Peace Day for 2016 is 'The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace. These 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at an historic summit of the world's leaders in New York in September 2015. Every single one of them is a building block in the global architecture of peace.
The need for peace in any society cannot be overemphasized. In our country Cameroon, the attacks that the Nigerian Islamist Sect Boko Haram is multiplying on our soil for over a year now have already led to the death of over 1,000 officially, and several kidnappings in the Extreme-North region of Cameroon.
This has spurred fear in our society and resulted in national unrest. According to the 'Global Peace Index Ranking 2016 ' by the Institute of Economics and Peace, Cameroon is ranked amongst the least peaceful countries in Africa (37th out of 50) and 130th in the world (out of 163 ranked countries). Given such ranking, we are obviously paying the price of Boko Haram; reason whyASCOA has put in persistent efforts to encourage peace building in our society. During the match pass, we distribute flyers and peace cranes with messages of peace.
We believe that, standing together for a peaceful society is the responsibility of each and every one of us for it is said that a single hand cannot tie a bundle, but together, we save more lives.
