Help Us Clean Our Shores From Plastic Pollution

$100 of $15,000 raised

Your Donation Can Free the Ocean and Coastline from Debris

Join The Association for Community Awareness (ASCOA) in celebrating #GivingTuesday. So many charities deserve your contribution, but we hope you remember the importance of ocean cleanup and consider making a donation in honour of #GivingTuesday to ASCOA.

The Association for Community Awareness or ASCOA was founded in 2013 to combat climate change, increase environmental awareness, and eradicate the spread of HIV and gender discrimination in the Buea region of Cameroon. We have witnessed firsthand the impact of plastic pollution on our beaches. Over one million marine animals die each year due to plastic waste that destroys habitats and wipes out entire species. Plastic pollution affects aquatic ecosystems and the people who depend on the sea and rivers for food and commerce. Initial data obtained by ASCOA from the coastline indicated that dead fish are periodically washed onto the shore.

According to the Cameroonian Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection, about 600,000 tons of plastic waste were identified in 2018, a figure that justifies our commitment to environmental protection.

It costs taxpayers vast amounts of money to keep their communities clean. Money that could be invested elsewhere in the economy is instead spent on cleaning up litter.

Our Impact

Every year ASCOA joins Ocean Conservancy and the international community to commemorate International Coastal Cleanup Day. In 2019, we collected more than 70 tonnes of plastic from our beaches. But there’s still much work to do, and we must carry on with our mission to keep our oceans plastic-free.

We need your help

In 2020 ASCOA’s project will take place along the Ngeme-Batoke coastal area in Fako Division, South West Region Cameroon. It covers 15 km of coastline that includes black sand beaches and mangrove forests. Apart from our volunteers’ hard work and time, certain costs are involved in cleaning up our seas. With your support, we can purchase beach cleanup equipment and promotional campaign materials. We can also cover the recurring costs of masks, gloves, garbage bags, etc., that protect our volunteers from exposure to dangerous waste. Your donations will further boost the growing enthusiasm and morale of our 300 volunteers.

We have come far thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors. This new fundraising activity aims to push our efforts to make a more profound impact on our communities.

Event Overview

The Coastal Cleanup is a collaborative outreach programme to clean up, fix, and conserve the environment. This year ASCOA welcomes partnerships with organisations that align with our environmental protection values. These partnerships will offer the opportunity to make a powerful impact on your organisation’s global and regional environmental network.

Activities

The project will focus on:

  • awareness-raising,
  • cleaning of plastic waste,
  • documenting of data using Ocean Conservancy clean swell App or data collection form,
  • waste sorting, to separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, especially plastic waste, that will be handled accordingly.

We appreciate your contributions

We are grateful to our donors and partners who have helped us put our ideas into action. Our communities will be cleaner and better off thanks to your support.
