Health & Wellbeing
Community health, prevention and well-being
ASCOA works with communities in Cameroon to improve health awareness, reduce vulnerability, and expand access to preventive services. Through school outreach, media health talks, sensitization campaigns, free HIV screening and counselling, and community partnerships, we help people make informed decisions about their health.
Our work also addresses water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), combining education, community water-quality monitoring, and cleanup activities around local water sources.
Our health projects
Your Health, Our Concern
At the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope on 25 February 2023, more than 70 trained volunteers supported an STI-prevention campaign that reached at least 3,000 people around Molyko Stadium. The campaign shared practical prevention information and distributed protective materials.
World AIDS Awareness & Screening
For World AIDS Day 2023, ASCOA worked with the Regional Technical Group Buea to provide free HIV testing, counselling, prevention information and community sensitization. A total of 67 people were tested.
Blood Donation & Sensitization
Working with Buea General Hospital, ASCOA mobilized 20 volunteers for a community sensitization campaign on 3 July 2021. The activity addressed misconceptions about voluntary blood donation and recorded people’s willingness to donate.
Water, sanitation and hygiene
Our school and community campaigns promote safe water practices, hygiene, and understanding of the link between water and health. ASCOA also monitors selected water-quality indicators at local sources and encourages communities to protect water points from pollution.
Community water-quality monitoring in Buea
On 30 December 2023, ASCOA assessed pH, turbidity and dissolved oxygen at the Mekongi (Sandpit) and Bokoko catchments. The project combines field observations with awareness of the need for continued monitoring and appropriate water-safety assessment.
