World Earth Day (22 April 2023)

Project Description

Marking Earth Day 2023, themed “Invest in Our Planet”, ASCOA partnered with EarthDay.org and organized a tree-planting activity along the Wouri coastline at Bilongue Waterway (Douala) from 20 to 22 April 2023. The initiative aimed to foster community involvement in environmental stewardship while promoting climate resilience and land restoration.

Objectives

  • Create a safer, cleaner coastal environment.
  • Prevent pollution and soil erosion while fostering climate resilience.
  • Raise community awareness about environmental stewardship.
  • Recruit and engage volunteers in meaningful environmental action.

SDGs Concerned

  • SDG 13 – Climate Action: Promote sustainable actions to counter global warming.
  • SDG 15 – Life on Land: Encourage tree planting and land restoration.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthen environmental collaboration with EarthDay.org and local partners.

Outcomes / Relevant Data

  • 153 registered for the event, with 112 confirmed attendance; extra volunteers were recruited to meet targets.
  • A total of 175 participants (ASCOA and For Earth’s Sake volunteers) engaged in cleanup and tree-planting activities.
  • Key partners included Ocean Conservancy, Team Seas, MINEPDED Littoral, For Earth’s Sake, Back2Eden, and The Light.
  • ASCOA provided logistics, health coverage, protective equipment, and communication/media outreach across platforms.
