Course Outline: What You Will Cover

The International Conflict Analysis and peace building course provides an opportunity to interact with and learn from very successful, highly qualified and experienced professionals on peace building and international relation. Participants will complete the following units:

  • An Introduction to Global Politics in the 21th Century

 Course Objectives:  

            -To understand better the problems of current international conflicts and the chances for peace building beyond mere basic TV and newspaper reporting

            -To learn the methods and analysis how peace researchers observe the current international area

            -To get familiar with main elements of (a) threats for international peace (like escalation, mistrust, the nuclear arms race and the international arms trade etc) and (b) constructive peaceful overcoming of international conflicts (like disarmament, confidence-building, peace education etc)

This online course gives an overview about essential topics of current International Politics:

  • The actors in international politics
  • Understanding the profiles of international conflict behavior
  • Threats to international peace and stability like the nuclear arms race, the global arms trade and dangerous modern weapons sophistication
  • Environment-related international conflicts
  • The new asymmetric war profiles of the 21th century
  • Peace building strategies like de-escalation, overcoming of enemy images and win-lose thinking, establishing good minority regimes, successfully ending civil wars, post-war sustainability strategies
  • Disarmament, De-Militarization, Conversion of military installations into civilian use
  • Approaches for Peace Education
  • NGO-Contributions to international peace building
  • Summary: “A Road Map to Peace

The course presents essential text introductions to the topics above and basic online material for self-study (online website links, book references and research findings). It gives an insight into what is happening in the global international area, the problems of international conflicts and perspectives for sustainable peace building, thereby addressing Goal 16 of the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDG).
