Executive Summary

This project was geared towards educating students and other audiences on the need to protect the environment and need for peace in the communities and the world at large. In this 21st Century, the rate of population growth has constituted a deterrent to environmental protection as forests are being cleared for human settlement and agriculture. This leads to environmental despoliation and consequently climate change and global warming. On the other hand, the rate of population growth has increased pressure on natural resources leading to the increasing demand of these resources and thus conflict for its existence. The need to control and acquire resources for economic development and other purposes by nations and individuals stands today as one of the most important source of conflict the world over. Also, cultural and religious differences have been a contributory factor towards conflict generation. These leads to the numerous conflicts between people, nations as well as between continents. As a backdrop from these, there was therefore the need to educate the youths on the protection of the environment and peace if the climate and world peace have to be achieved. The main approach used to present the information to the participants included discussions, drawing competitions, presentations by guess speakers, illustrations, media sensitization among others.

Strategies

This project used mainly illustrations and presentations by guest speakers and some ASCOA members to disseminate works and illustrations of both environmental protection and peace. The major objective of this project was to educate youths on the need for protecting our environment, creating the awareness of what the environment is, the role it plays in balancing the biogeochemical cycles of life from which man depends on as well as the need for peace within the communities and world we live in.
In achieving these objectives, a two weeks media publicity and sensitization of the public through the local media stations available was done. Printing and distribution of flyers to the public, discussions, illustrations and competitions among students were also carried out to educate the entire population on the need for environmental protection and peace in the world. The problems created by certain indigenous farming methods like the “Ankara system” (burying and burning of grasses with an intention of improving fertility of soils) were discouraged. The role of some biogeochemical and their importance were presented and illustrated by sketches and banners carrying the theme of the day-World Ozone Layer Protection Day and World Peace Day.
