Your Health, Our Concern: STI Prevention

HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major public health challenge in Cameroon, as in most of sub-Saharan Africa. Since the first AIDS case was detected in 1985, the country has faced a generalized HIV epidemic, with unprotected sexual contact being the leading cause of transmission. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently, have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of HIV and other STIs.
To support the Ministry of Public Health in its fight against HIV, the Association for Community Awareness (ASCOA) carried out a large-scale sensitization campaign on February 25, 2023, in Buea Municipality, during the annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope. The initiative, titled “Your Health, Our Concern,” brought together more than 70 trained volunteers to educate the public on STI prevention and distribute protective materials such as condoms, lubricants, and flyers. The campaign reached participants inside and outside the Molyko Stadium, creating a strong platform for health advocacy at one of Cameroon’s most popular sporting events.

Outcome

Reached and educated at least 3000 individuals around Molyko Stadium on 25 Feb 2023.
Distributed at least 1152 male condoms, 200 female condoms and 250 lubricants during the event.
Addressed misconceptions about female condoms and demonstrated their proper use.
Treated minor health issues during the event with basic medication such as paracetamol and diclofenac, which increased community trust.
Strengthened ASCOA’s relationship with law enforcement, media, and local stakeholders, who openly commended the initiative.

Objectives

To raise awareness on HIV/AIDS and STIs prevention.
To promote consistent and correct use of condoms and lubricants.
To empower communities with accurate sexual health information.
